Nashville, Tenn.—Kentucky State University women's basketball began a stretch of three games in six days with a 70-57 loss to Trevecca Nazarene University on Tuesday night at the Trojan Fieldhouse.
"We didn't come to play tonight," said head coach
Terrance Slater. "Our defense wasn't up to my standards, and we didn't play with energy."
The Thorobrettes (7-10, 4-5) dropped their second consecutive contest, following a three-game win streak. The Lady Trojans (5-12) snapped a five-game losing streak and picked up only their second win in their last 11 games.
In a tightly contested first half, KSU and TNU went into the locker room tied at 33. The Thorobrettes jumped out to a 40-37 advantage but was outdone by a 19-8 run to end the third quarter by the Lady Trojans. TNU entered the final frame up 56-48, a lead that wouldn't be relinquished.
Junior guard
Nashaye Sutton had her first breakout performance since joining the active roster in early January. The transfer from Alabama A&M scored a career-high 22 points, hitting five-of-seven from beyond the three-point arc, and 8-of-12 from the field.
"Nashaye (Sutton) is becoming very comfortable, and we are going to need that going down the stretch," said Slater. "She works hard, and is coachable. Having those qualities is going to make her great."
Fellow junior guard
Brooklyn Sharpey added six points, five rebounds, and a team-high five assists.
Senior forward
Aliyah Gipson added nine points and five rebounds off the bench.
KSU will host Auburn Montgomery University in doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
