Frankfort. Ky.—Kentucky State University men's basketball will open the regular season on Tuesday against the University of Cumberlands at the Exum Center with tipoff set for 7 p.m. ET.
The Thorobreds welcome back four starters from a year ago and will turn to first-year head coach
Jamaal Jackson to lead the way. As a KSU alum, Jackson is ready to get his first season underway.
"The players and coaches are excited to get the season started," said Jackson. "We have a tough first opponent, with the University of Cumberlands, but we've been preparing, and I believe the guys are ready to give their all."
Since taking over in July, Jackson has had to play catch up with his team on the floor and behind the scenes.
"Now the dust has settled, the guys have been working hard and know we're very early in the process," said Jackson. "They know that if we stick to the plan and continue to do what we're supposed to do daily, we'll be where we need to be."
KSU has won three consecutive home openers and Tuesday night's contest will be the first against NAIA, Mid-South Conference member UC. The Patriots (6-1) have started off their season winning six of the first seven games, with a lone loss to Indiana University Southeast. Away from the Wayne Collins Center, UC is 3-0.
In their only exhibition game on Nov. 8 against No.20 Lindsey Wilson College, the Thorobreds rode the momentum of a 19-3 run to come within striking distance in the closing moments but fell short 80-78. The contest previewed the Thorobreds' ability to fight back with full court pressure defense and play making ability.
Senior guard
Malcolm Smith and senior guard
Reggie Breeden combined for 47 points in the exhibition, while senior forward
Julius Barton scored 11 points and snatched six rebounds.
Tuesday night's contest will be streamed live on the Thorobred Sports Network, with coverage starting at 6:45 p.m. ET.
