Box Score FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Kentucky State women's basketball team fell victim to an uncharacteristically cold shooting performance in its first game of 2016, losing 66-29 at Fort Valley State in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Saturday.
Despite coming into the game on a three game winning streak and leading the SIAC in field goal percentage, the Thorobrettes struggled to find their stroke in Saturday's contest. They shot 19.6 percent (10-of-51) from the field and 1-of-17 from 3-point range.
Fort Valley State also controlled the paint in the game, holding a 54-36 rebounding advantage, a 44-16 edge on points in the paint, and an 18-2 lead in second chance points.
The Wildcats did most of their damage during a stretch in which they held Kentucky State scoreless for more than eight minutes and held the Thorobrettes without a field goal from the 3:13 mark in the first quarter until a
Joymesia Howard basket with 7:28 left in the third quarter. During the span, Fort Valley State built what had been a 13-6 lead to 20-6 by the end of the first quarter and 37-9 by halftime. The Wildcats led 50-19 after three quarters and went on to build the lead to as many as 37 points.
Individually,
Logan Powell had six points to lead the Thorobrettes, while Howard added five in her Kentucky State debut. Katice Williams had 14 points with 10 rebounds to lead Fort Valley State.
Kentucky State drops to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in SIAC play, while Fort Valley State improves to 2-10 on the year and 1-2 in the conference. The Thorobrettes will look to get back on the winning track when they travel to Albany State on Monday.
