Thorobrettes Push Winning Streak to 10 With Win Over Miles, 62-57

Shaquanda Wiggins scored 18 points and pulled down 18 rebounds tosecure her ninth double-double of the season and help the Kentucky State University women's basketball teamdefeat the visiting Miles College LadyGolden Bears, 62-57, on Saturday afternoon at the Exum Center. With the victory, the Thorobrettesextend their current winning streak to 10 games.

Kentucky State pushes their record to 18-4 overall and 13-2 against SIAC opponents. Miles falls to 7-16 overall and 4-12 in SIAC play.

Miles jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in the first few minutes of the game but Kentucky State responded with a 10-0 run of their own to take the lead that they held onto for the rest of the half. The Thorobrettes connected on 39 percent of their shot attempts in the first half while holding MC to just 29 percent.

In the second half, the Lady Golden Bears battled hard, tying the game five times in the first ten minutes but KSU was able to hold the lead each time. With 7:53 left in the half, MC guard Shawntal Byrd hit a jumper that ignited a 7-0 Miles run to give them a three point lead with 6:03 left in the contest. The Thorobrettes once again responded though, getting a clutch jumper and free throws from Wiggins to give KSU the lead back at 54-53 with just over four minutes remaining. KSU outscored Miles 12-4 in the final five minutes of the contest, hitting clutch free throws at the end to hold on for the victory.

One of the biggest factors in the game was the discrepancy on the boards. Kentucky State outrebounded Miles 47-28.

Brieona Warner led the Thorobrettes with 20 points on Saturday. She also had six points, two steals and a block. Along with her 18 point, 18 rebound double-double, Wiggins also picked up five assists and a game-high three blocks. Jessica Jones added eight points and four rebounds.

Porshia Blue played all 40 minutes for Miles, dropping in a game-high 31 points to go along with six rebounds and four steals. Blue was the only Lady Golden Bear to finish in double digit scoring figures.

Kentucky State now hits the road for a pair of conference games in Alabama next week. The Thorobrettes start with a game against Spring Hill on Thursday, Feb. 19, at 5:30 p.m. (CT) before heading to Tuskegee on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 1:00 p.m. (CT).
