Thorobrettes Use Early Surge to Outlast LeMoyne-Owen, 85-72

The Kentucky State University women's basketball team shot a season-high 55 percent from the floor to outlast the visiting LeMoyne-Owen College Lady Magicians, 85-72, on Thursday evening at the Exum Center to push their current winning streak to nine games with another SIAC victory.
 
Another convincing victory pushed the Thorobrettes to 17-4 overall and 12-2 in SIAC play. LeMoyne-Owen gets swept by KSU in their season series and falls to 14-7 overall and 9-4 in conference action.
 
The Thorobrettes took control right from the opening tip, jumping out to an early 12-0 run to start the game. KSU continued to keep the pressure on, taking a commanding 24-4 lead with just over 11 minutes left in the first half. From their LeMoyne-Owen got some ground back, trailing by 14, 43-29, as the teams headed to the locker rooms.
 
KSU shot a scorching 56 percent (18-of-32) from the field in the opening half while holding LOC to just 27 percent (8-of-30).
 
In the second half, the Lady Magicians started with a 16-8 run to cut the big KSU lead to just six, 51-45, with 12:10 left on the clock. KSU regained its composure and rattled off a 10-2 run of their own, capped by a Shaia Horton 3-pointer, to put the Thorobrettes ahead 61-47 with 9:48 left on the clock. From there KSU used more hot shooting, 53 percent from the field in the second half, to hold their lead and coast to their ninth straight victory.
 
Kentucky State had five players finish in double figures on Thursday. Senior forward Brieona Warner, who was named SIAC Player of the Week on Tuesday, led the team with 19 points to go along with seven rebounds. Shayla Moore had an outstanding all-around game, finishing with 14 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and a steal. Shaia Horton added 13 points, six boards, two blocks and a pair of steals. Point guard Jessica Jones went 5-of-5 from the field to finish with 11 points. Center Shaquanda Wiggins added 10 points, five boards and a pair of blocks.
 
LeMoyne-Owen was led by forward Tenesha Wright who finished with 22 points and three steals. Guard Latrice Sears, who was held scoreless in the first half, went 5-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe in the second half to finish with 16 points. Montique McConnell added 15 points.
 
Kentucky State will look to push its winning streak to 10 games when Miles College visits the Exum Center this Saturday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. KSU will be hosting its annual "Pink Game" where the teams encourage fans to wear pink to help raise awareness about breast cancer prevention. The game also doubles as "Take a Kid to the Game Day" where all children under 18 will get free admission with the purchase of an accompanying adult ticket.
