Box Score OWENSBORO, KY. – The Kentucky State women's basketball team picked up its second win in as many days in the Fairfield Inn Christmas Classic, holding off host school Kentucky Wesleyan for a 72-64 victory on Sunday at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
Jamesha Mosley had 24 points, seven rebounds, and four steals to lead the Thorobrettes, who claimed their third straight win and their second over Kentucky Wesleyan this season with Sunday's result. Coming into the game, the Panthers had been winners of five straight since falling to Kentucky State on Nov. 21 in Frankfort.
Mosley was one of four Kentucky State players in double figures, with
Alexis Stallard,
Samantha Rundblade, and
Shaia Horton each contributing 11 points. Brittany Wells led Kentucky Wesleyan with 17 points.
The Panthers held just one brief lead in the game at 2-0 before Mosley and
Logan Powell answered with consecutive baskets to put Kentucky State in front the rest of the way. The Thorobrettes gradually built their lead through the first half, holding a 20-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and taking a 35-27 lead to the halftime break.
Kentucky State took control of the game in a third quarter that opened with a 3-pointer by Rundblade. She went on to make another 3-pointer and score eight points during a third quarter surge that helped the Thorobrettes extend their lead to 55-39 by the end of the quarter.
Kentucky State built its lead to as many as 19 points early in the fourth quarter, but the Panthers battled back, outscoring the Thorobrettes 25-17 in the final period. Though Kentucky Wesleyan was able to trim the margin to single digits on five occasions, Kentucky State answered each time and never allowed the lead to drop to less than eight points.
Kentucky State shot 50 percent (6-of-12) from 3-point range and 47 percent 24-of-51) overall, while Kentucky Wesleyan shot just 14 percent (1-of-7) from outside and 46 percent (25-of-55) overall. The Thorobrettes held a slight rebounding advantage at 33-32.
Kentucky State improves to 7-2 on the season with the win, while Kentucky Wesleyan drops to 6-4 overall. After the holiday break, the Thorobrettes return to Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition with a trip to Fort Valley State on Jan. 2.
