Box Score OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Kentucky State women's basketball team opened play in the Fairfield Inn Christmas Classic by pulling away in the third quarter for a 75-53 win over Trevecca Nazarene University on Saturday.
The Thorobrettes scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed.
Alexandra Stanford led Kentucky State with 16 points, while
Shaia Horton chipped in 13 points, including three 3-pointers.
Taylor Sanders and
Jamesha Mosley each added eight points for the Thorobrettes, while Sarah Raby led Trevecca Nazarene with 11 points.
Despite the early Kentucky State lead, Trevecca Nazarene was able to keep the game close throughout the first half. The Thorobrettes led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and took a 34-25 lead to the half after a Horton 3-pointer capped a 7-1 run before the break.
Kentucky State took that momentum into the third quarter, where they pulled away with a 15-0 run in which Horton, Sanders, and
Samantha Rundblade all made 3-pointers. The Thorobrettes held the Trojans without a field goal for a six minute stretch in the quarter, and by the time the run was over they held a 56-34 lead. Trevecca pulled to within 13 points early in the fourth quarter but would get no closer.
Kentucky State shot 48 percent (29-of-60) overall and 47 percent (7-of-15) from 3-point range while holding the Trojans to just 28 percent (15-of-53) from the field and 27 percent (6-of-22) from outside. The Thorobreds also held a 49-29 edge in rebounds and a 34-16 advantage on points in the paint.
Kentucky State improves to 6-2 with the victory, while Trevecca Nazarene drops to 1-7 with the loss. Both teams are back in action at the Fairfield Inn Christmas Classic again on Sunday, with the Thorobrettes taking on the host Panthers at 1 p.m. Central Time. It will be the teams' second meeting this season, following a 79-59 Kentucky State victory in the C.Y. Russell Classic on Nov. 21.
