Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky State women's basketball team bounced back from its first loss of the season by defeating Charleston University 62-45 on Monday at the Exum Center.
The Thorobrettes got a game-high 22 points from
Jamesha Mosley on 9-of-10 shooting from the field, while
Brooklyn Sharpey added nine points and led all players with seven rebounds.
Alexandra Stanford added eight assists for Kentucky State.
Charleston jumped out to an early 10-2 lead, but it would be one of few highlights for the Golden Eagles in the game. Six straight points by Mosley sparked a run that helped the Thorobrettes trim the margin to 14-12 by the first quarter break, and another six points by Mosley early in the second quarter helped Kentucky State take the lead at 18-17.
The second quarter featured five ties and five lead changes, but the Thorobrettes took control of the game by closing the half on an 11-0 run while holding Charleston scoreless for the final three minutes. That run allowed Kentucky State to take a 37-25 lead to halftime, and the Thorobrettes would stay in front by double digits the rest of the way. They were able to build their lead to as many as 18 points on two occasions in the closing minutes.
Kentucky State shot 47 percent (23-of-49) for the game while holding Charleston to just 29 percent shooting (18-of-62). The Thorobrettes also held a 40-34 rebounding advantage and outscored the Golden Eagles 36-26 in the paint.
Kentucky State improves to 3-1 on the season with the win, while Charleston falls even at 3-3 with the loss. The Thorobrettes are back in action at the Exum Center again when they open Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play against Paine College at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
