Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In a matchup of unbeaten teams, the Kentucky State women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2015-16 season, falling 77-61 at Bellarmine on Saturday.
The Thorobrettes got 14 points from
Jamesha Mosley and 12 each from
Alexis Stallard and
Logan Powell, but they led just briefly on two occasions in the second quarter. The Knights outscored Kentucky State 23-8 in the third quarter to pull away in what had been a closely contested game to that point.
Bellarmine took an early lead in the game and held a 17-16 advantage after the first quarter, but the Thorobrettes were able to go ahead early in the second quarter on a jumper by
Aliyah Gipson that made the score 18-17 and a layup by Mosley that made the score 20-19.
Unfortunately for Kentucky State, those would be the only leads it would hold in the game. The Knights answered Mosley's layup with seven straight points and took a 35-26 lead to halftime. The third quarter was when Bellarmine took control, holding the Thorobrettes scoreless for more than five minutes while opening the half on a 13-0 run.
The Knights built the margin to as many as 25 points in the third quarter before taking a 57-34 lead to the final period. The Thorobrettes outscored Bellarmine in the final quarter, but they would get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
Bellarmine's Sarah Galvin led all players with 20 points. The Knights shot 46 percent (29-of-63) to Kentucky State's 36 percent (26-of-72) and held a decided advantage from outside, connecting at 35 percent (7-of-20), while the Thorobrettes shot just seven percent (1-of-15). Bellarmine also held a 49-33 rebounding advantage.
Kentucky State drops to 2-1 on the season with the loss, while Bellarmine improves to 3-0. The Thorobrettes are back in action when they host Charleston University on Monday at the Exum Center. The game will tip off at 6 p.m. following a send-off celebration for the Kentucky State volleyball team, which will travel to play at Palm Beach Atlantic in the NCAA Tournament on Thursday.
