Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky State pulled away for a victory in its season opener, posting an 87-68 win over Fisk University in women's basketball action in the 2015 C.Y. Russell Classic on Friday at the William Exum Center.
The Thorobrettes had a balanced offensive attack in the game, putting four players in double figures.
Alexandra Stanford led the team with 16 points on 7-of-7 shooting, while
Alissa Brown chipped in 14 with the two tying for the team lead with seven rebounds each.
Shaia Horton and
Alexis Stallard each had 12 points for Kentucky State.
Though the Thorobrettes won comfortably, they found themselves playing from behind early after Fisk jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first three minutes. Kentucky State chipped away at the lead throughout the first quarter, eventually tying the game at 18 as
Brooklyn Sharpey sank a long 3-pointer as time expired.
The Thorobrettes went on a 9-0 run early in the second quarter and took a 38-32 lead to halftime, but the Bulldogs did not go away. Fisk trimmed Kentucky State's lead to two on four different occasions in the third quarter but would get no closer.
Kentucky State got a 3-pointer from Horton and a layup from
Taylor Sanders to close out the third quarter with a 61-53 lead, then went on to turn that into a 16-2 run and a 72-56 lead with six minutes to play. The Thorobrettes went on to lead by as many as 22 points in the closing minutes.
For the game, Kentucky State shot 50 percent (32-of-64) from the field, while holding Fisk to 39 percent (26-of-66) shooting. The Thorobrettes also held a 41-37 rebounding advantage and turned the ball over just 10 times to the Bulldogs' 16.
Kentucky State opens the season at 1-0 while Fisk drops to 1-5 with the loss. The Thorobrettes are back in action on Saturday when they host Kentucky Wesleyan at 4 p.m. at the Exum Center. Kentucky Wesleyan fell 48-46 to Central State in the first game of Friday's doubleheader.
