Thorobrettes Handed First SIAC Loss by Claflin, 62-55

Box Score

FRANKFORT, Ky. –
Senior guard Shakiema Ravenell scored a game-high 17 points to help the Claflin University Lady Panthers defeat the Kentucky State University Thorobrettes in a SIAC women's basketball game on Thursday evening at the Exum Center.

Kentucky State (6-3, 2-1 SIAC) drops its first conference contest this season after failing to overcome its first half struggles against Claflin (8-3, 2-1 SIAC). CU forced KSU into 15 first half turnovers and converted those into 24 points.

Poor free throw shooting once again plagued the Thorobrettes who shot just 39 percent (7-for-18) from the charity stripe on Thursday. Making things worse was the fact that Claflin connected on 80 percent (20-for-25) of their chances from the line to hold off several runs by KSU in the second half.

Center Shaquanda Wiggins picked up her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Wiggins also had a pair of blocks and two steals. Guards Taylor Sanders and Shaia Horton both scored 11 points. Sanders also added a game-high four assists.

The Lady Panthers were led offensively by Ravenell's 17 points but also received production from guard Shaniece Brown who scored 14 points off the bench for CU. Forward Karahn Scott added 10 points, six rebounds and three steals.

The Thorobrettes continue their three-game home stand with a match-up against SIAC opponent Clark Atlanta on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM at the Exum Center.
