Box Score

TUSCALLOSA, Ala. -
The Kentucky State University women's basketball team held off a tenacious Stillman College Lady Tigers team to earn their fifth straight victory, 61-58, on Saturday afternoon at Birthright Gymnasium.

In the opening half, the teams went back-and-forth, with neither team taking a lead of more than five. There were 16 ties or lead changes in the first half alone.

Kentucky State (13-4, 8-2 SIAC) shot just 31 percent from the floor in the opening half but were much more effective in the second, hitting 41 percent of their attempts.

Stillman (6-13, 5-6 SIAC) briefly held the lead in the second half when Joclyn Ramos converted a layup with 11:02 on the clock to put the Lady Tigers ahead, 42-40. KSU took the lead back, 46-44, when All-SIAC guard/forward Shayla Moore hit a jumper at the 7:37 mark. The Thorobrettes wouldn't trail again.

With just seven seconds remaining in the game, Moore stepped to the free-throw line and coolly knocked down a pair to put KSU ahead by seven, 58-51. Thanks to a pair of steals from Stillman's Fran Tyson, the Lady Tigers went on a quick 5-0 run to cut the KSU lead to just two, 58-56, with 19 seconds remaining.

On the Thorobrettes next possession, Logan Powell drew a foul and sank a pair a free-throws, she was 3-for-3 from the line on Saturday, to give the Thorobrettes a two possession lead again. As SC raced down the floor, Brieona Warner came up with a key steal before being fouled quickly with just 10 seconds left. Despite missing both of her attempts, Moore came up with a key offensive rebound to keep possession. Moore stepped to the line and split a pair to put the game out of reach, 61-56.

As time expired Ramos hit a jumper for SC but it wasn't enough as Kentucky State earned another conference victory.

Kentucky State was once again led by Shaia Horton who finished with 17 points on 6-for-17 shooting. Shaquanda Wiggins finished with her seventh double-double of the season, dropping in 12 points to go along with 11 boards. Moore finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

Stillman was paced by Ramos and Angel Mitchell who finished with 13 points apiece. Ramos also had a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with five assists.

The Thorobrettes now set their sights on a trip to Bruce/Johnson Hall for a match-up with SIAC West Division leading LeMoyne-Owen (12-4, 8-1 SIAC) this Monday, Feb. 2, at 5:30 p.m. (CT).
