Thorobrettes Blowout Rival Central State, 102-84

Box Score

FRANKFORT, Ky. –
Scoring the programs most points since the 2001-02 season, the Kentucky State University women's basketball team overwhelmed rival Central State University, 102-84, on Monday evening at the Exum Center.

The Thorobrettes (10-4, 6-2 SIAC) shot 62 percent (18-of-29) from the floor as a team on their way to a 52-41 lead at halftime. In just 16 minutes on the floor in the first half, senior center Shaquanda Wiggins had already secured her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She finished the game with 16 points, 12 boards and a pair of blocks.

Central State (6-12, 3-5 G-MAC) ended the game with decent offensive numbers but never really threatened Kentucky State on Monday. The Lady Marauders shot 44 percent from the field but allowed KSU to get in an offensive rhythm early. The Thorobrettes finished the contest shooting 54 percent (38-of-70) from the field, including 44 percent (8-of-18) from 3-point range.

With just over 14 minutes left in the second half, a jumper from forward Brieona Warner sparked a 12-0 run that turned into a 25-11 run that was capped by a Logan Powell 3-pointer with just over five minutes remaining in the game. That run gave the Thorobrettes their largest spread of the game at 32 points with a 91-59 lead. With 1:10 left on the game clock, Shaia Horton cut to the basket and connected on a layup that gave the Thorobrettes 100 points for the first time since Feb. 4, 2002, when KSU defeated Oakland City, 103-74.

The layup capped a great game for Horton who finished with a season-high 28 points. For the second game in a row Horton got hot from beyond the arc, going 5-for-10 from 3-point range. In Saturday's game against Tuskegee, Horton finished with 25 points, connecting on seven 3-point attempts. She now leads the Thorobrettes with an average of 12.7 points per game this season.

Starting forward Powell had another solid game for KSU, going a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor to finish with a season-high 19 points. Ashley Huddleston had a strong game off the bench, going 4-of-7 from the floor and 6-of-11 from the free-throw line to finish with 14 points. Warner added eight points, nine boards and three assists. Jessica Jones dished out a game-high five assists.

Central State was led by guard Iniquia Snell who finished with 23 points, four rebounds and four assists. Demetria Nunley-Lash finished with 12 points. Amanda Pierce and Bria Spaulding both finished with 11.

Kentucky State now hits the road for a 3-game road trip beginning with a match-up against SIAC opponent Miles College. The Jan. 29 contest is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
