Kentucky State Dominates Visiting Tigerettes, 83-52

Box Score

FRANKFORT, Ky. -
The Kentucky State University women's basketball team dominated almost every facet of Saturday's SIAC contest against the visiting Tuskegee University Tigerettes to earn an 83-52 victory at the Exum Center.

Tuskegee (1-15, 1-8 SIAC) kept things close in the early going but Kentucky State (10-4, 6-2 SIAC) used several extended runs to build up their lead. Trailing by three with just under 18 minutes on the first half clock, Brieona Warner sparked a 9-0 KSU run with back-to-back layups. At the end of the half, Kentucky State used a 10-0 run to open up a 22 point lead, 45-23, as the teams headed into the locker rooms.

In the second half, KSU kept the pressure on, never letting TU closer than 21 points. With 9:32 left in the game, Shaia Horton, who had 10 points at that point, hit the first off what would be five 3-pointers before the end of the contest to finish with 25 points. The Tigerettes couldn't get their offense going as they shot just 29 percent from the field in the second half.

Two big factors in the game were the Thorobrettes ability to spread the ball around and turnovers. As a team, KSU got assists on 21 of its 31 made field goals. On the other side, TU's offense was stagnate, leading to just two assists as a team. The other major factor was turnovers.  Kentucky State forced the Tigerettes into 24 turnovers and scored 27 points as a result. The Thorobrettes turned the ball over a season-low 10 times.

Horton hit seven 3-pointers on Saturday to tie a season-high with 25 points. She also pulled down six rebounds and picked up four steals. Shayla Moore finished with 12 points, five rebounds and a pair of blocks. Center Shaquanda Wiggins came off the bench and added 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Point guard Jessica Jones finished with a game-high eight assists and four steals. Guard Brooklyn Sharpey had seven points and eight rebounds.

Tuskegee was led by Rachel Brownlee who finished with 16 points and nine rebounds before leaving the game with an ankle injury. Kaylen Ward and Antionette Brown each finished with 10 points.

Kentucky State now looks forward to this Monday, Jan. 26, when they host rival Central State at the Exum Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
