Box Score 4 WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Kentucky State women's volleyball team went winless in its season-opening tournament this past weekend at the Hyatt Place Sunshine Classic hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic University on Sept. 5-6.
Â
While the early season losses are disappointing for the Thorobrettes, the difficult early-season schedule has proven effective in the recent past. Just last season the women's volleyball team dropped its first three matches of the season before rebounding to go 15-1 in SIAC action and capture its third SIAC Championship in the past four seasons.
Â
DAY ONEIn Kentucky State's first match of the tournament on Friday morning, the Thorobrettes fell to Bridgeport University 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-20).
Â
In their afternoon match, the Thorobrettes fell to host Palm Beach Atlantic, ranked number 25 in the AVCA preseason poll, 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-14).
Â
"I thought we competed well against that level of competition," Head Coach
Christina Coleman said of the day-one competition. "We didn't handle the ball like we should have and we only played well for brief periods of time."
DAY TWOOn the second and final day of the tournament, Kentucky State dropped a pair of matches against Barry University and Eckerd College.
Â
In the Thorobrettes' 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-19) loss to Barry, sophomore setter
Anjelique Kyle had her most effective match, finishing with 28 assists.
Â
In its second match of day two and final contest of the tournament, Kentucky State fell in straight sets to Eckerd College 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-15).
Â
"We played well enough to compete, but we didn't put everything together to win sets," Coleman said after the tournament. "We need some more specific training in key areas to make sure that we put complete matches together. We can learn from this and move forward."
Â
Kentucky State returns to action this Friday, Sept. 12, when the Thorobrettes kick off their SIAC West Division Cluster against Stillman at 10 a.m. The SIAC West Division Cluster allows all the teams in the SIAC West Division, including newcomer Spring Hill, to play up to six matches over the 2-day tournament on Sept. 12-13.
