Thorobreds Fall to Johnson C. Smith 13-6

Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. – In a game that saw the two sides combine for six fumbles and 197 penalty yards, Johnson C. Smith was able to hold on for a 13-6 victory against Kentucky State Saturday afternoon at JCSU's Irwin Belk Complex.

The Golden Bulls got on the scoreboard just one minute and 32 seconds into the game when quarterback Keahn Wallace hooked up with Leander Barney for a 30-yard touchdown pass to put JCSU ahead 7-0 early in the game.

Johnson C. Smith tacked on three more points when kicker Erik Amaya split the uprights for a 27-yard field goal to extend the Golden Bulls' lead to 10-0 in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter Kentucky State picked up its only points of the game when running back Jacquise Lockett picked up his first rushing touchdown of the season on a 2-yard rush with 10:48 on the clock. An extra-point attempt failed, leaving KSU trailing 10-6.

Amaya connected on a 22-yard field goal, with 6:12 left in the contest, to put JCSU ahead by a final margin of 13-6.

Lockett led Kentucky State on the ground, finishing with 89 rushing yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. Justin Williams finished with 53 yards on 13 carries. KSU quarterback Adam Robinson finished the contest going 12-for-26, a 46 completion percentage, with 169 yards through the air. Robinson was uncomfortable in the pocket all day, getting sacked four times by the JCSU defense.

The Thorobeds were plagued by fumbles all game long, with Robinson coughing up three and Lockett adding another. JCSU's Chris Randolph was the catalyst for three of those fumbles, as he was a disrupter for the Golden Bulls all day. Randolph finished with 11 tackles, 5.5 for loss, three sacks and three forced fumbles.

Kentucky State played well defensively, allowing just 281 total offensive yards from the Golden Bulls. Deshon Floyd and Donavon Cecil had a forced fumble each. Linebackers Terry Horton and Lydell Simon led the defensive unit with 10 tackles each.

Kentucky State comes back home for a game against Virginia State next Saturday, Sept. 20, at 4 p.m.
