Kentucky State Nips LeMoyne-Owen in Double Overtime, 89-87

Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. -- With just 1.3 seconds left in double overtime, Kentucky State point guard Quentin Henderson drove baseline and pulled up for the go-ahead floater to help the Thorobred's defeat the LeMoyne-Owen Magicians, 89-87, on Thursday night at the Exum Center.

Kentucky State (10-9, 8-5 SIAC) extends their season best winning streak to six games as they sweep LOC in the home and away season series. The Thorobreds defeated the Magicians, 68-57, on Jan. 27th in Memphis, TN. The win also help's the Thorobreds strengthen their hold on second place in the SIAC West Division standings with just four SIAC games remaining on their regular season schedule.

LeMoyne-Owen (6-13, 4-7 SIAC) drops their third in a row as they prepare for a game against Lane College on Saturday.

Kentucky State was up by as many as 17 points early in the second half but the Magicians continued to fight, making things stressful for the Thorobreds Thursday night.

With just 14 seconds remaining in regulation, LOC's Denzel McDaniel was fouled and went to the line for a pair of free-throws with his team trailing by just one. After missing the first, McDaniel hit the second attempt to tie the game at 69-69. After a flurry of substitutions, Kentucky State's Devan Crain brought the ball up the floor as the Thorobreds held for the final shot. Crain settled for a step-back jumper from the right side of the floor which was off the mark and sent KSU to its second overtime game of the season.

In the first overtime session neither team built a lead larger than three points as the teams went back-and-forth.

LeMoyne-Owen's Daequan Mitchell-Fie picked up three of his team-high 21 points when he hit a 3-pointer with just over a minute left in the first OT to put the Magicians ahead by one point, 79-78.

After Daquavion McCants split a pair of free-throws to put LOC ahead by two, 80-78, the Thorobreds needed an answer.

Henderson stepped up for KSU by driving to the basket and drawing a foul with just seven seconds remaining. With the crowd hushed, Henderson connected on both free-throws to tie the game at 80-80.

Mitchell-Fie got up a 3-point attempt as time expired but couldn't connect, sending the game in double overtime.

In the second OT the teams once again battled back-and-forth for the advantage with the lead changing four times.

With 54 seconds remaining, Kentucky State's Troy Adam's split a pair of free-throws which once again tied the score, this time at 87-87.

LeMoyne-Owen's Timothy Ware got off a shot with just over 30 seconds remaining but was off the mark and Darrien Wilkins pulled down one of his six rebounds.

Kentucky State head coach Antwain Banks elected not to use a timeout and Henderson brought the ball down the floor for the Thorobreds. Henderson dropped the ball off to Adams who drove to the lane before kicking the ball back to Henderson out wide to the left. Henderson drove baseline and pulled up for a floater that dropped through the rim with just 1.3 seconds remaining on the game clock.

After a quick timeout McCants got off a 3-point attempt at the buzzer that came dangerously close to giving LeMoyne-Owen the improbable victory but Kentucky State held on for the 89-87 win.

The Thorobreds were led offensively by Adams who dropped in 21 points, shooting an incredible 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. Henderson finished with 15 total points and a game-high four assists. Ulysses Thomas III has 20 points. Brandon Darrett picked up seven points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

LeMoyne-Owen had three players finish with double-figures in scoring. Mitchell-Fie finished with 21 points and three steals. Marcel Hawkins had 15 points and eight rebounds. LOC center Demba Konate finished the game with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Kentucky State will host the Miles College Golden Bears this Saturday, Feb. 8th, at the Exum Center before hosting rival Central State this Monday, Feb. 10th, at the Frankfort Convention Center.
