IU Southeast Uses Second Half Surge to Down Kentucky State, 81-74

FRANKFORT, Ky. – 
After trailing by five points at the half, the visiting Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers shot a scorching 56 percent from the floor in the second half to put up 50 points and defeat the Kentucky State University Thorobreds, 81-74, on Wednesday night at the Exum Center.
 
The Thorobreds (1-1) took a 36-31 lead into the locker room at halftime by holding IU Southeast (3-2) to just 39 percent from the floor in the opening half but the wheels fell off defensively for KSU in the second half.
 
Freshman guard Demetrius Stanton encapsulated the Grenadiers second half surge. After going 0-for-3 for zero points in the first half, Stanton didn't miss a shot in the second. He went 6-for-6 from the floor, including a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc, while going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe to put up 20 second half points.
 
Senior guard Jake Simpson led IU Southeast with a game-high 23 points. Senior point guard Harry Cross contributed with 19 points of his own while moving the ball around with a game-high five assists.
 
Kentucky State was once again led offensively by senior Ulysses Thomas III who went 7-for-13 from the floor to finish with 17 points. Thomas also had a game-high four steals, part of the 16 turnovers that KSU forced on Wednesday.
 
Sophomore Muhammad Cross had an effective night for KSU going 2-for-2 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line to finish with 10 points. Starting forward Tim Bates had a team-high five rebounds for the Thorobreds who were outrebounded 42-35 over the course of the game.
 
Guard Tryston Ford was a bright spot for Kentucky State in the second half going 3-for-5 from three point range to finish the game with nine points.

Kentucky State now begins a stretch of six straight road games that lasts until after the winter break. The Thorobreds begin with a trip to Evansville, Ind. where KSU will take on the University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 3:15 p.m. (CT).
