Thorobreds Exact Revenge Against Morehouse, 89-79

Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. -- The Kentucky State University Thorobreds picked up their second straight SIAC victory with an 89-79 victory over the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers on Thursday evening at the Exum Center.

Morehouse is the team that bounced Kentucky State from the SIAC Championship Tournament last season when they defeated the Thorobreds, 66-65, in the second round of the tourney.

The victory pushes the Thorobreds overall record to 4-8 and 3-4 in SIAC action. The win helps separate Kentucky State from the bottom half of the SIAC West Division standings. KSU is currently third in the standings of the six team SIAC West Division.

Kentucky State has now strung together two games in which they have shot over 54% from the floor as a team. The Thorobreds connected on 54.2% (32-of-59) of their shots against Morehouse including 40.9% (9-of-22) from 3-point range.

KSU got up shots from beyond the arc early and often against Morehouse. With Morehouse in a 2-3 zone for much of the contest, the Thorobreds were able to spread the floor well by consistently challenging the Maroon Tigers to cover shooters.

At halftime the Thorobreds had built a 16 point lead over Morehouse. Just before the end of the half, Morehouse head coach Grady Brewer was assessed a technical foul for stepping onto the court as he argued a foul call that had just been made against MC guard Austin Anderson. Kentucky State guard Antonio Sullivan was awarded five free-throw attempts and connected on four to put KSU ahead 49-33 going into the intermission.

In the second half the Thorobreds would build their lead to as many as 22 points when with 10 minutes left in the game Darrien Wilkins converted a fast break layup to put KSU ahead 71-49.

However, the Maroon Tigers showed a lot of resiliency and dwindled the Kentucky State lead to just eight when Morehouse's Anderson connected on a 3-pointer with just under two minutes left. It was too little too late for the Maroon Tiger's though and Kentucky State held on for their second straight SIAC victory.

The Thorobreds will face off against their first SIAC West Division opponent this Saturday when they host the Tuskegee University Tigers. The Tigers currently sit atop the SIAC West Division standings at 6-8 overall this season, 3-2 in SIAC play. Tip-off for Saturday's game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Exum Center.
