Box Score Columbia, S.C. -- The Kentucky State University Thorobrettes fell to the Benedict College Lady Tigers, 62-50, on Saturday afternoon at the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Senior forward Santera Grooms had a game-high 23 points for the Lady Tigers (11-4, 5-0) who sit atop the SIAC East Division Standings.
The Thorobrettes (4-9, 0-5 SIAC) dropped their fifth straight game to start SIAC play. Kentucky State was led offensively by Brieona Warner who scored a team-high 17 points while also contributing with four steals. LaShell West added 11 points and a team-high six rebounds.
KSU was able to force Benedict into 29 turnovers while only committing 18 as a team but the Thorobrettes shooting struggles nullified their defensive pressure.
As a team the Thorobrettes shot 33% (17-of-52) from the floor including just 17% (2-of-12) from beyond the arc.
Benedict also shot poorly over all, 37% from the floor, but the Lady Tigers were able to knock down key 3-pointers throughout the game, connecting on 40% (6-for-15) of their 3-pointers.
The teams were evenly matched in the opening half with Kentucky State taking a 21-20 lead into the halftime break.
Warner converted a lay-up on the opening possession of the second half to push the Thorobrettes lead 23-20 but the Lady Tigers responded with nine straight points of their own.
Benedicts Kadeeja Vaugn hit a 3-point shot at the 17:15 mark to give the Lady Tigers a 29-23 lead.
Benedict pushed their lead to as many as 17 points in the second half when Jasmine Stubbs connect on a 3-point attempt with 4:21 left in the game to put BC ahead 51-36.
Kentucky State will look to get back on track and pick up their first conference win this Monday against the Paine College Lady Lions. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Augusta, G.A.
