Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. -- The Kentucky State University women's basketball team picked up an upset victory over the visiting University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles, 78-72, in a non-conference contest on Thursday evening in the Exum Center.
The Thorobrettes (4-4) were able to maintain a small lead throughout most of the game by shooting an impressive 48.3% from the field as a team compared to just 35.7% for Southern Indiana (4-1).
After holding the lead for almost all of the second half, KSU surrendered the lead with just 2:07 left on the clock when Southern Indiana's Anna Hackert converted a layup to put the Screaming Eagles ahead, 67-66.
After that the Thorobrettes showed a lot of composure, connecting on 10-of-12 free throw attempts in the final 2 minutes of action to seal the upset victory and hand USI their first loss of the season.
Senior guard
LaShell West, who is averaging a team high 15.6 points per game this season, lead the team with 21 points. West also had seven rebounds, three assists and two steals against USI.
Junior forward
Brieona Warner was a major factor in the interior pulling down a team high eight rebounds while also picking up three steals and a huge block with less than 30 seconds left in the game that prevented an easy USI layup. Warner also had seven points for KSU, five of them coming in the final three minutes of the game.
The Screaming Eagles were led by Hackert, who despite being in foul trouble for much of the game, finished with a game high 28 points and nearly secured a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds.
As a team, the Thorobrettes really spread the ball around effectively tallying 20 assists on 29 made field goals.
Kentucky State won't be back in action until January 2
nd, 2014 when the Thorobrettes travel to Albany State University for their first conference game of the season. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
