FRANKFORT, Ky. – Senior quarterback Rashard Burkette rushed for a pair of first quarter touchdowns to help lead the Tuskegee Golden Tigers to a 36-7 victory over the Kentucky State University Thorobreds in an SIAC West Division football contest on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Tigers, who sit on top of the SIAC West Division standings, move to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the SIAC. Kentucky State falls to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the SIAC.
Burkette, who finished the game with a team high 61 yards rushing, also threw for a touchdown and tallied 136 yards through the air finishing 14-for-23. Burkette threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Kalee Williams late in the fourth quarter to seal the game for Tuskegee. Williams finished with a team high 53 receiving yards on four catches.
Sophomore quarterback Alex Springs started his first game for the Thorobreds against Tuskegee and was effective. Springs finished the game with 123 passing yards, going 10-for-20 with an interception which came on a desperation heave late in the game. Springs also compiled 56 rushing yards on seven attempts which is an average of 8.0 yards per carry.
The SIAC's leading rusher, Jacquise Lockett, finished with a game high 66 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries for the Thorobreds.
At the end of the game the teams had comparable totals offensively. Tuskegee finished with 342 yards of total offense to 265 for KSU. As a team the Golden Tigers racked up 182 yards rushing and 160 yards through the air while the Thorobreds finished with 142 yards on the ground and 123 yards passing.
The big difference in the game was penalties.
Kentucky State finished the game with 129 penalty yards after they were penalized 14 times on Saturday afternoon. In a hotly contested game, the penalty situation continually plagued the Thorobreds.
The Thorobreds will head to Jackson, Tennessee next week for their final road game of the season against Lane College. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (CT).
