During the regular season, the Brettes 3 –of-4 games and then defeated the Lady Bears 5-1 Thursday in their first game of the tournament.
This sixth game between Miles and KSU was an elimination game for both teams. Both having already lost one game, the winner would advance to the championship game to play Stillman College at 4 p.m. today.
Lorena Villamar got the start on the mound today for KSU, while
Kayla Bowmaster started for the Lady Bears. The game was very much a defensive battle, each team jockeying for base runners and once getting base runners, hoping for that one hit that would clear the bases.
After four and a half scoreless innings, the Lady Bears came up to bat in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Terri Roberts singled through the left side, stole second and then advanced to third on a passed ball.
Kayla Cox hit a ground ball to first base and Roberts attempted to score. A heads up play by KSU first baseman and senior, All-Conference First Team selection,
Shenaaz Burrell prevented Roberts from scoring, throwing her out at home as
Caitlyn Pierotti made a great tag. The Lady Bears scored two runs on a single by
Kat Haisten.
Brianna Mitchell, who was on first, was tagged out at third by
Angelica Galindo to end the inning.
The sixth inning sparked excitement for KSU. After
Palaura Parker fouled out to the first baseman, Burrell, in typical fashion, crushed a homer to left field, and with one swing of the bat, the Brettes were within one run in the top of the 6
th.
Amanda Talley came in to pitch for the Lady Bears after the Burrell homerun and Villamar and
Candace Stallworth accounted for the Brettes second and third outs.
The Brettes held Miles scoreless again in the sixth inning. The seventh inning began with Galindo grounding out to second and Pierotti flying out to center.
Jasmine Anderson came to bat and on a 0-1 count, singled up the middle. With two outs and one on base, yesterday's hero,
Brittney Flores, attempted to keep the rally going for the Brettes. On a 1-0 count, Flores took a good cut and hit a pop foul. Miles' third baseman came charging and caught the ball near the fence, ending the Brettes comeback.
The Thorobrettes end the 2012 campaign 28-18 overall (18-6 SIAC) and third in the conference.
