Box Score HAMPTON, Ga. (April 20, 2012) - Kentucky State's softball team continued play today after a huge, come-from-behind win over Fort Valley State. The only piece of the puzzle missing after that win was their next opponent. Just minutes after their defeat of the Lady Wildcats, KSU found out they'd be playing No. 1 seeded Stillman College, an all-too-familiar divisional foe.
First pitch was at 7 p.m. and for the first time this tournament, the Brettes were the away team. Batting first, KSU scored first as
Brittney Flores doubled to left field then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Lorena Villamar. Flores scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by
Palaura Parker
The score remained 1-0 in favor of KSU until the bottom of the fourth inning when Stillman's Gray singled up the middle and then Holt homered deep to left center, giving the Lady Tigers a 2-1 lead.
The Brettes threatened to score several times over the next two innings but were unable to capitalize on opportunities to drive in runs. In the bottom of the sixth, Stillman loaded the bases and after
Danielle Garay walked in a run, Villamar came in to pitch. With runners on second and third, Quarles scored on a Villamar wild pitch, bringing the score to 4-1 in favor of Stillman.
The score would remain at 4-1, as KSU was unable to produce any runs in the seventh inning, ending the game and forcing KSU to play a game in the loser's bracket of the tournament. Stillman moves on to the Championship round.
The story is not all bad for KSU, however, as they play at 1 p.m. tomorrow against the winner of the Miles-Tuskegee game. If the Brettes win that game, they will play Stillman again at 4 p.m. tomorrow. With a win over Stillman, the Brettes would move to the Championship game, in which they would play Stillman for the third time this tournament, on Sunday at 10 a.m.
The Thorobrettes are now 28-17 this season, and despite their first loss of the tournament, these young ladies are poised to storm back and take the SIAC title.
