Box Score Frankfort, Ky (February 7, 2012) – The Kentucky State University Thorobrettes did more than raise awareness for women's heart disease and National Black HIV/AIDS day; the Brettes raised the score to defeat the Lane College Lady Dragons 73-56.
The Brettes came stampeding out of the gate with layups from
Cortney Matthewis and
Tiffany Merritt. The team's leading scorer,
Jasmine Davis then sunk back-to-back three pointers. The Brette's stampede quickly became a gallop as the Lady Dragons made scoring plays that resulted in a lead change.
The Thorobrettes never counted themselves out of the game. With solid hustle and consecutive threes from Davis and Matthewis, the Brettes were back in the lead. The first half went shot for shot between the two teams. With :09 left on the clock, Lane's Angel Hornsburger hit a three tying the game up 37-37. The Brettes refused to settle for going into the locker room tied at the half after senior, guard
Raven Ward sank a deep three to end the half.
KSU began the second half similar to the first. :15 into the half, Davis fires a three. Her teammates
Kristi Malohi and
Megan LaRue helped the Brettes' offensive cause with points in the paint. The Brettes took off full force forcing turnovers; drawing fouls and hitting jump shots. The Brettes only allowed eleven points in the first fourteen minutes of the half.
The Brettes' spectacular second half of play showed that KSU is still a contender in the SIAC. They were aggressive both defensively and offensively.
Jasmine Davis was the leading scorer for tonight's game with 15 points, 5 assists and one steal.
Cortney Matthewis had 13 points, 5 assists, a block and a steal.
Shayla Moore had 10 points and 3 steals for the night.
This win puts the Brettes at 8-12 (7-10 SIAC). The Brettes travel to Memphis, TN to take on LeMoyne-Owen College on February 9, 2012.
