Box Score FRANKFORT, KY (February 25, 2012) – In their last home game of the season, the Kentucky State University Thorobreds took on the Morehouse College Tigers. The Breds defeated the tigers 75-68 in overtime.
“I felt like we had nothing to lose going into this game it was the last game, my last game, just high hopes going into the tournament,” said
William Marsh. “We were more relaxed at the beginning of the game. We won two games and were trying to keep the train rolling before the conference tournament.”
Missed jumpers and turnovers were how the Thorobreds started the first half. The Tigers defense proved tough, as the Breds remained scoreless for the first six minutes of the game.
Earl Ruffin Jr. put the first couple of points on the board for the home team with a nice jumper and an And 1 play. Troy Adam's followed his teammate's play with a nice jumper of his own.
The Breds score remained the same for four more minutes of game play. An And 1 play from senior,
Austin Rich gave the Breds some momentum. Adam's sunk back-to-back threes from behind the arch to bring the Breds within two of the Tigers. A good layup by
John Gaston ties the game at 22-22. Morehouse's Mario Farris put five points on the board before KSU's Adams answered back with a jumper. The Breds went into the locker room at halftime trailing the Tigers 25-29.
The second half began with a quick layup from
William Marsh. A foul against Morehouse sent Adams to the line. Adams went 1-2 from the line putting the Breds within one of the Tigers. A tip-in from
Markus Montague gave the Breds the lead with the score being 30-29.
The Tigers went on a 12-1 run that last five minutes. KSU's Marsh ended the Tiger's streak with a picture perfect three pointer. Adams followed up with a three pointer of his own. Layups from Rich and Montague quickly followed. With 8:35 left in regulation, the Breds went on a 12-0 run putting them the lead (52-47).
A three from Morehouse's Daniyal Faquir and a dunk from Shawn Allen tied the game up at 52-52. The game went tit for tat for the remaining three minutes of regulation. Free throws by Rich tied the game at 58-58. Morehouse was unable to score before the buzzer.
“Before overtime it felt like as bad as we played, hustle plays we didn't get and free throws we missed we were getting a second chance,” said Coach Banks. “We had five more minutes to do as we always say 'Whatever it takes, no excuses.'”
Overtime started off as a back and forth game between the Breds and Tigers. This changed after Adams scored his last points of the game with a layup. As the clock ticked down, the Tigers continued to foul the Breds. The Breds went 9-10 at the line in overtime, giving them the victory of 75-68 over the Tigers.
The Leading scorer for today's game was Troy Adams with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Senior,
Austin Rich had 14 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal for his final home game as a Thorobred. Senior,
William Marsh had 15 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals for his final home game as a Thorobred.
“The momentum feels great we're confident and excited for the conference tournament,” said Coach Banks.
This win leaves the Breds 12-14 (12-12 SIAC) for the season. The Thorobreds travels to Atlanta, GA to play in the SIAC Tournament on February 28, 2012.
