Thorobrettes Fall to Lady Wildcats in Conference Battle

Box Score ALBANY, Ga. (January 3, 2012) -- The Thorobrettes traveled to Fort Valley, Ga. tonight for a conference game against the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State University. After 40 minutes of play, the Lady Wildcats prevailed with an 88-65 victory over the Thorobrettes.

The Lady Wildcats scored first on a layup by Yasheeka Jones. After a missed three-point shot by Jasmine Davis, Tiffany Merritt grabbed the offensive rebound and cashed in with a put-back layup to tie the game at two. FVSU scored again quickly on a jumper by Jones, but it would be another two minutes before another bucket was made. FVSU went up 6-2 as Jones sunk another layup, but the Brettes inched closer after FVSU's Jasmine Birdsong fouled Brettes' newcomer, Sharnita Lloyd. Lloyd converted both free throws and after a missed layup by Brandi Haynes, Lloyd grabbed the defensive rebound and was fouled again. Despite the non-shooting foul, Lloyd was able to sink a short jumper to tie the game 6-6.

FVSU took a 13-10 lead with 12:57 to play in the half, but KSU answered and took a 15-13 lead on back-to-back baskets by Cortney Matthewis and Lloyd (three-pointer). Lady Wildcat Shytina Harley tied the game at 15 with a mid-range jumper, but Matthewis answered right back, sinking another jumper and giving the Brettes a 17-15 lead with 11:16 to play in the half. KSU went on a short 4-0 run, but FVSU responded with a 6-0 run to take a 20-19 lead.

Solid defense and offensive production by all players on the court allowed KSU to storm back, taking a 33-31 lead with 1:56 to play in the first period. FVSU was able to take a 34-33 lead heading into the intermission on a made free throw and jumper by Jones.

This game was the tale of two halves. The Lady Wildcats seemed relentless in the second half, pushing their lead to 10 with 13:06 to play after making a 15-7 run to open the second period. Davis attempted to singlehandedly bring the Brettes back, knocking down two three-pointers to bring the Brettes within four points (51-47) 11:27 to play in the game.

Missed shots and turnovers allowed the Lady Wildcats to go on a 27-11 run and build a 20-point lead with 3:51 left in the game. The deficit was too much for the Brettes to overcome as the Lady Wildcats defeated them 88-65.

Jones' 17 points was a team-high, followed by Jayme Gilbert with 14 points.

Senior guard, Matthewis, led the Brettes with 19 points, five rebounds and two assists, while the team leading scorer, Davis was good for 14 points and two assists. Merritt also chipped in with 11 points and a game-high 8 rebounds.

The Brettes, now 3-5 overall (3-3 SIAC), play Albany State on Thursday, January 5 at ASU. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
