Thorobreds Fall in Overtime to Stillman

Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. (January 26, 2012) – In an overtime battle, the Kentucky State University Thorobreds fell to the Stillman College Tigers 76-79.

The Tigers were able to put the first points on the board. On the other end junior, Kevin Smith started the game off for the Thorobreds with an and-1 play. His teammate Earl Ruffin Jr. came out the gate with intensity scoring a quick two points in the paint and on the next possession sunk a deep three. The Breds held the Tigers to two points for two and a half minutes.

Attacking the basket proved well for the Breds in the first half scoring (number) of points in the paint. For two minutes of play it was sophomore, Troy Adams shined. He was making buckets in the paint and sinking them from behind the arch. Stillman's Ford Damian was aggressive on defense and behind the three point line. The Breds went to the locker room ahead of the Tigers 38-32.

During halftime, the Stillman Tigers gained momentum and scored 8 unanswered points in the first two minutes of the half. Smith's trip to the free throw line and his quick two points in the paint kept the Breds in reach of the Tigers. The game stoodstill at 45-46 for three minutes. Adams was able to tie the game while going 1-2 at the free-throw line and made the lead change in favor of the Breds.

After a standing ovation from the crowd, Patrick Dawson entered the game and drove hard in the paint and got the and-1. For the next five minutes, Smith dominated on offense. With 6:56 left to play, Austin Rich's layup tied the game back up. The game went tit for tat for the remaining of regulation. Ruffin made a crucial three with 1.7 seconds left of game play to tie the game. The Tigers passed the ball in ball inbounds; Ladarius Rhone was unable to shoot a successful layup at the buzzer sending the game into overtime.

The Breds began overtime hot and heavy. The Tigers send two Thorobreds to the line in the first minute of play putting the Breds up by three. “The big show” Markus Montague came up with two much needed second chance points. Stillman's Kenyour Williams shot a jumper to narrow the lead to three points.  Fouls and free-throws from both teams were the story for the remaining minute of overtime. The Breds were unable to tie to the game for a chance to go to a second overtime in the final second of the game.

Kevin Smith ended the game with 17 points, an assist and a steal. Troy Adams had 14 points and an assist. Austin Rich wasn't far behind with 13 points, 5 assists and a steal. Earl Ruffin Jr. had 12 points and a block.

The Kentucky State Thorobreds are now 6–6 (6-9 SIAC). The Breds travel to Xenia, OH to take on the Central State Marauders on Saturday, January 28, 2012.
