Box Score Frankfort, Ky. (January 17, 2012) - The Kentucky State Thorobrettes faced the Fort Valley Lady Wildcats in a home conference match. Starting off with a 9-0 lead, the Lady Wildcats made it a tough game for the Brettes. A foul allowed the Brettes to put their first points with two made free throws by the team's leading scorer,
Jasmine Davis. The next time down the court Davis hit a three pointer followed by a lay-up after a steal by
Shayla Moore, pulling KSU within four (11-7).
After a lay-up by
Raven Ward the Lady Wildcats went on a six point run (19-11). With two free throws by Moore the Brettes cut the Lady Wildcats' lead to four with a minute left in the first half (23-19). The Lady Wildcats were able to creep away with the lead despite the Brettes efforts to fight back, and ended the half with a score of 32-19.
The Brettes found life in the second half led by Davis, Moore, and
Sharnita Lloyd. KSU had a difficult time breaking FVSUW's press in the first half but in the second half, with some adjustments the Brettes found ways to score and get stops on defense. The Brettes defense held FVSUW at 49 points for over 4 minutes. During this time, the Thorobrettes went on a 11 point run with 3-point baskets by Moore and Davis. After a big 3-point shot by Moore with an assist from Lloyd the Brettes trailed 47-59. During the Brettes' next possession Lloyd hit another 3-pointer with an assist from Davis. The third possession was definitely a charm for the Brettes, when
Cortney Matthewis hit 3-point shot. The Thorobrettes continued to move at a fast pace with back-to-back to back layups, tying the game at 59-59. Davis then shot another 3-pointer, giving the Brette's their first lead of the game (62-59) with 2:11 left in the game.
The Lady Wildcats' Domonique Collier got a quick two points in the paint and trimmed the Brette's lead to one point. After missed free throw attempts and a steal were able to score two points in the paint with 15 seconds left. The Brette's moved the ball down the court but were unable to close out the game as Matthewis missed a game winning jumper as time expired. The final score was 62-63.
The Lady Wildcats were led by Jasmine Birdsong with 15 points and game-highs in rebounds, with nine and steals, with four. Collier followed with 12 points and four rebounds, while Jayme Gilbert chipped in 11 points.
Davis continued her impressive season for the Brettes, going for 21 points on 7-8 shooting from the field, including 4-5 from beyond the arc. Matthewis had 12 points, six rebounds, a game-high two blocks and two steals. Moore added 10 points, while Lloyd dished a game-high tying four assists. As a team, the Brettes shot 38.8% from the field and an impressive 53.3% from three-point range (8-15).
The loss puts the Thorobrettes at 5-8 (5-6 SIAC). Next up for KSU is a conference battle against the Albany State University Lady Rams at home on January 19 at 5:30 p.m.
