ATLANTA, Ga. – Tonight, the Thorobrettes' SIAC Championship chase ended with a 50-58 loss to the Benedict Lady Tigers in the quarterfinal round of the 2011 SIAC Basketball Tournament at Clark Atlanta's L.S Epps Gymnasium.
The game started with a quick layup for Benedict's Charvez Holmes off a missed three-pointer by KSU's
Asia Dubose. Both teams went cold over the next two minutes until BC's Bridget Williams hit a short jumper to put the Lady Tigers up 4-0 with 17:12 in the first period.
Benedict went up 6-0 before
Cortney Matthewis hit a jumper to put the Thorobrettes on the board. Matthewis was fouled on the play and hit her shot from the charity strip to bring the Brettes within three, 3-6 (BC). Williams scored a bucket in the paint for BC, but KSU fought back as Matthewis hit a jumper in the paint, followed by a turnover by BC's Alexus Jones and a made three-pointer by Dubose to tie the game at 8-8.
With 4:53 to play in the half, KSU took its first lead of the game after the Brettes'
Brittany Holder made a short jumper in the paint to put KSU up 18-16. The Lady Tigers and Thorobrettes exchanged buckets to the tune of the fourth tied score of the half with 22 seconds to play. With :05 seconds to play, BC's Jones hit a layup to give the Lady Tigers a two-point lead at the half (26-24).
One minute, 45 seconds into the second half, KSU tied the game at 26 on a layup by
Kiarra Morgan. On the Lady Tigers' next possession, Holmes hit a jumper to give BC the lead at 28-26. Benedict pushed their lead to five with 15:12 to play, but the Brettes fought back, exploiting BC's inability to capitalize on second-chance points. With 13:22 to play in the half, KSU's Matthewis hit a jumper to pull the Brettes within two (29-31).
At the 9:15 mark, the Brettes found themselves down by seven (31-38) but pulled within three points on buckets by
Kiera Nelson and
Raven Ward. A layup by Utivia Barnes with 7:09 to play put the Lady Tigers up by five, but Dubose drained a three-pointer with 6:46 to play, bringing the Brettes within two (40-42). Unfortunately for the Brettes, their push came up just short, as they fell to the Lady Tigers 50-58.
KSU's Matthewis led all scorers with 17 points. She also had 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Dubose followed with 10 points and 5 rebounds, while Holder had 9 points, 5 rebounds. BC's Barnes had a game-high 15 rebounds, while teammates Santeria Grooms and Holmes scored 12 points each. Holmes also had 7 boards.
The Thorobrettes finish the 2010-11 season 17-11 overall.
