Kentucky State Thorobrettes Pummel Paine College, Advance in SIAC Tourney

Box Score ATLANTA, Ga. – Tonight the No. 5 seeded Kentucky State Thorobrettes took on the No. 12 seeded Paine College Lady Lions in the opening round of the SIAC Tournament. After forty minutes of play, the Thorobrettes, in convincing fashion, defeated the Lady Lions 59-39.

The game, played at Clark Atlanta's LS Epps Gymnasium, was dominated by KSU from start to finish. Megan LaRue opened the matchup with a three-pointer, which seemed to set the tone for KSU's intensity and hunger for a win. At the 6:35 mark, KSU had built a 26-14 lead, and as the half continued, the Brettes' proved to be too quick and strong for Paine. KSU took a 39-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.

KSU continued to have their way with the Lady Lions in the second half. The Brettes forced turnovers and capitalized on second-chance points. Despite Paine holding KSU to five points in the last nine minutes of the game, the Lady Lions were never able to cut into the deficit.

Antionette McPhail recorded a double-double with a game-high 15 points and 15 rebounds in 36 minutes of play for Paine College.

All-Conference Second Team selection Cortney Matthewis led three Kentucky State players in double figures with 15 points followed by Raven Ward who chipped in 13 points and Kiera Nelson with 11.

The Thorobrettes advance to the second round against fourth-ranked Benedict College Thursday, March 3, 8 p.m., at Clark Atlanta.
