Thorobrettes Bounce back at Home, Defeat Paine College

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Two days after suffering a tough loss in overtime to Benedict College, the Thorobrettes battled conference foe Paine College and avenged their first loss of the season by defeating the Lady Lions 65-56 at the Exum Center.

Behind great rebounding, KSU jumped out to an early four-point lead, but Paine's sharpshooter Alice Holmes knocked down a three-pointer at the 15:39 mark, giving the Lady Lions a one-point lead (7-6). The Thorobrettes took the lead back when Joanna Powell stole the ball from Antoinette McPhail and Cortney Matthewis connected on the put-back layup to give KSU a 8-7 lead.

On the Lady Lions next possession, Jasmine Faulkner missed the short jumper, but McPhail was there to snatch the rebound and kick it out to Holmes at the top of the key for another three-pointer, putting Paine up 10-8 with 13:35 to play in the first half. The Lady Lions went on a 9-0 run over the next 3:04 to push their lead to 19-10 midway through the first half.

The 'Brettes attempted a comeback, but Holmes continued to be the thorn in their side, knocking down midrange jumpers and three-pointers to give Paine an 11-point lead at the 5:50 mark. The Lady Lions took a seven-point lead into the locker room at the half behind Holmes' 11 points.

The first five minutes of the second half had both coaches screaming for their teams to run the called plays, but the Thorobrettes and Lady Lions traded, not just points, but also turnovers and steals. Ultimately, KSU came out on top. With 15:11 to play, McPhail turned the ball over after snatching the offensive rebound. KSU responded as Kiarra Morgan grabbed an offensive rebound and the put-back layup and was fouled. Morgan missed the free throw shot, but her layup gave the 'Brettes their first lead (40-39) since the 14:19 mark of the first half.

KSU gave up their lead just once more, falling behind 51-52 with 9:41 to play in the game, but offensive rebounds and second-chance points allowed them to regain the lead at the 8:29 mark (53-52) and not relinquish that lead the remainder of the game.

The Thorobrettes scored 22 points in the paint and converted 17 points off turnovers in the second half to lock in their third win of the season and second win in the SIAC.

Kiera Nelson
and Matthewis led the 'Brettes with 11 points each while grabbing 9 and 10 rebounds, respectively. Morgan had another solid performance in the paint, grabbing 11 boards and with 7 points. Asia Dubose clocked 10 points, including two big three-pointers, while Megan Larue and Raven Ward scored nine points each.

The Thorobrettes have one a home game on Saturday, December 4 at 1:00 p.m. against Claflin University.
