FRANKFORT, Ky. - In a game that remained close through its entirety, Kentucky State's women fell 54-62 to Benedict College tonight at the Exum Center.
The first half was sluggish for both teams as the Thorobrettes shot 18.8% from the field (6-32) and the Lady Tigers just 20% from the field (8-40). At the intermission, BC led 25-22.
At the start of the second half, the Lady Tigers built their lead to seven on a layup by
Bridget Williams, but both teams went scoreless over the next 1:16 until Thorobrette
Cortney Matthewis stole the ball from
Keszia Gortman and scored the fast break layup (31-26 BC). The Lady Tigers pushed the lead back to seven at the 14:30 mark as
Brittany Jackson hit a jumper in the paint, but KSU's
Kiera Nelson closed the gap to four converting the and-one play as she was fouled on a made short jumper in the paint. Megan Larue then brought the 'Brettes within two points (31-33) on a jumper and on BC's ensuing possession,
Asia Dubose stole the ball from
Ashlee Jones and Matthewis hit a short jumper to tie the game at 33 with 13:13 to play in the game.
With 1:13 to play Nelson stole the ball from BC's Jackson and Larue hit a three-pointer to give the 'Brettes a 47-46 lead. With 23 seconds to play in the game, Matthewis knocked down two free throws to give the 'Brettes a 49-46 lead, but Jones tied the game on a three with just 12 seconds to play. KSU had a chance to win it as time ran out, but Matthewis missed a put-back layup as time expired in regulation.
In overtime the Lady Tigers built a six-point lead, a deficit from which the Thorobrettes would not overcome. After 45 minutes of play, BC defeated KSU 62-54, improving to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the SIAC. With the loss, KSU falls to 2-1 (2-1 SIAC).
BC's Jones had a game-high 20 points, while teammate Jackson boasted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Utavia Barnes had a game-high 14 rebounds.
KSU was led by Larue with 15 points, shooting 6-19 from the field, including 2-6 from behind the arc. Matthewis ended the day with 12 points and 5 rebound, while Morgan snatched 10 boards and racked up six blocks (second time this season with 6 blocks in a game).
The Thorobrettes will be in action again on Monday, November 29 in a home, conference battle against Paine College. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
