Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Thorobreds Erase Halftime Deficit, Survive Final Seconds to Edge Fort Valley State

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – A season-high of 19 points from Morganne Postell and a forced turnover in the final seconds of regulation led Kentucky State women's basketball to a 61-60 win over Fort Valley State.

Postell was able to lead all scorers' shooting over 70% (8-of-11) from the field and 75% (3-of-4) from the free-throw line. Aaliyah Hayes followed with 15 points while Amaya Asher added 12 points with a game-high of four steals.

How It Happened
The Thorobreds got off to a slow start in the opening frame, and the Wildcats found their rhythm early, shooting 50% from the field and 80% from three-point range to take a 20-14 lead. Although the Kentucky State bench scored 14 points in the half, the Thorobreds would go into halftime trailing 35-28.

The script was flipped in the third quarter, with the Thorobreds holding the Wildcats without a field goal for nearly four minutes. At the 1:49 mark, Asher drained a three-pointer to give Kentucky State a 42-40 lead – their first advantage since the opening minutes.

In the final quarter, the game tied five times, and the Kentucky State lead was reignited by a knockdown jumper from Hayes with 38 seconds remaining, giving the Thorobreds a 59-55 cushion. The Wildcats would lead by one before Postell drove for a critical layup with 16 seconds left, pushing the score to 60-57.

In a chaotic final six seconds, the Wildcats scored on a layup to come within one of the 60-59 lead. After Alycia Triplett made one of two free throws (61-59), the Wildcats went to the line with four seconds left. Fort Valley State's Aaniyah Martin made her first attempt but missed her second, allowing a Wildcat rebound, but a missed jumper at the buzzer would lead to a 61-60 victory for the Thorobreds.
