FRANKFORT, Ky. – Clean offensive play combined with 11 blocks led Kentucky State men's volleyball to a 3-0 sweep over Midway Tuesday in Bell.
On the offensive side, the Thorobreds finished the match with a .209 hitting percentage, while keeping the defensive pressure on Midway forcing a negative hitting percentage of -.013.
The Thorobreds also out-blocked the Eagles 11-4 during the match, with Jeremiah Wilmond leading the way with five block assists.
Charles Ababio led Kentucky State with 14.5 points and 13 kills, his teammate
Jamir Patterson was efficient with a .333 hitting percentage while adding two aces.
Jackson Moffitt was key on offense with 29 assists during the match.
How It Happened
The opening set was a back-and-forth battle with 10 ties and two lead changes. Kentucky State took an early 7-2 lead behind a kill from
Charles Ababio and series of errors from Midway.
Once the Eagles tied the game at 23-23 the match became a marathon with the Thorobreds breaking through as Moffitt hammered a kill assisted by Ababio to put them ahead 32-31. Midway followed with an attack error that sealed a 33-31 first set win for Kentucky State.
In the second set the Thorobreds used their defense to limit Eagles, recording five blocks during the set. With the set tied 18-18, the momentum changed in favor of Kentucky State as they went on a 4-0 run. The Thorobreds would take the set on error from the Eagles that led to a 25-20 set win and a 2-0 match lead for the Thorobreds.
Getting off to a 4-0 lead in the third set, Kentucky State used their efficiency to take the set 25-17 and sweep Midway 3-0.
