ATLANTA — Kentucky State University senior defensive back
Roman Hernandez has been named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Football Defensive Player of the Week following a dominant performance in the Thorobreds' 46-0 shutout victory over Miles College on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Alumni Stadium.
Hernandez anchored the Kentucky State defense with five tackles, including four solo stops, an interception returned 58 yards for a touchdown and a fumble recovery. The senior accounted for two of the Thorobreds' four takeaways in the conference victory.
The defensive back delivered the game's biggest defensive play with 6:56 remaining in the third quarter, intercepting Miles quarterback Brinley Vandiver at the Kentucky State 42-yard line and racing 58 yards for a touchdown. The defensive score extended the Thorobreds' lead to 36-0.
Hernandez made his presence felt earlier in the third quarter when he recovered a Miles fumble, giving Kentucky State possession at the Golden Bears' 40-yard line.
He continued to make an impact in the fourth quarter, recording a crucial goal-line stop when he tackled Miles' Todrick Withers for no gain at the Kentucky State 1-yard line, helping preserve the shutout.
Behind Hernandez's performance, the Thorobreds held the Golden Bears scoreless, limited Miles to just 73 passing yards and forced four turnovers.
Kentucky State football will remain at home as they host SIAC opponent Lane on Saturday, Oct. 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. inside of Alumni Stadium.
