FRANKFORT, Ky. – Senior center
Amina Seck posted a dominant double, but Kentucky State women's basketball could not overcome difficulty from the field, falling to Edward Waters 59-47 on Thursday.
Seck led the Thorobreds with13 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks, continuing to standout in conference play.
Despite out-rebounding the Lady Tigers 44-38 and holding a 32-26 advantage on the defensive glass, Kentucky State struggled to find its rhythm offensively, shooting just below 30% from the field.
First Half: A Defensive Battle
The Thorobreds opened the contest with defensive intensity.
Aaliyah Hayes jump-started the offense with an early 3-pointer to give KSU a 3-0 lead. However, Edward Waters responded with a high-pressure defense that forced seven first-quarter turnovers from the hosts.
In the second quarter, Kentucky State found success in the paint.
Morganne Postell and Seck combined for tough baskets inside to pull the Thorobreds within a single possession at 19-18. Tigers managed to close the half on an 11-5 run, fueled by Shcira Fowles and Jourdan Avery, taking a 30-23 lead into the locker room
Second Half: Struggles from the Perimeter
Kentucky State's defense remained stout in the third period, limiting EWU to just 12 points.
Amaya Asher provided a spark off the bench with a fast-break layup to keep the Thorobreds within striking distance. However, a 2-for-8 (25%) performance from behind the arc for the game hindered KSU's ability to mount a significant comeback.
The fourth quarter saw the Thorobreds cut into the lead multiple times, but the Lady Tigers answered every run. Avery and Tan Brown, who finished with 11 and 10 points respectively, hit timely shots to maintain the cushion. KSU showed late life as Seck converted a layup in the final seconds, but the clock expired on the comeback attempt.
