Kentucky State Softball Opens SIAC Crossover with Shutout Win Over Allen, Defeats Benedict

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In the opening day of the SIAC Crossover, Kentucky State shutout Allen 11-0 in five innings and defeated Benedict 6-1.
 
Both Theressa Pelland and Kayla West controlled the mound on day one. Pelland pitched her first shutout of the season striking out six batters while only allowing one hit in the first contest. West continued the dominance striking out six batters through seven innings giving up just one run to Benedict.
 
Against Benedict Aaliyah Long went a perfect 2-of-2 in the batter's box that included the Thorobreds only double of the game.

The Thorobreds opened the first inning on strong note capitalizing on early mistakes from the Yellow Jackets to put seven runs on the board. Savannah Teale recorded the first hit of the inning on a line drive into left field and Alarryia Jones added the second hit on a fly ball into left field.
 
Three additional runs were added in the second inning as Andralyn Brown singled to the pitcher followed by Ashley Adkins and Laila Troxler scoring on passed balls to put the Thorobreds ahead 10-0 through the first two innings.
 
Adkins scored the final runs of the day on a passed ball in the fourth inning solidifying the Thorobreds 11-0 victory.

 At the top of the first inning Teale hit a sacrifice fly into left field to send in Brown for the first run. Jorden Bowman crossed home as West was walked with the bases loaded and Long scored the final run on a wild pitch.
 
West added a run in the third as she scored on a wild pitch extending Kentucky State to a 4-1 lead.
 
A single into left field by LillieAnn Hollom allowed Long to cross home. Makayla scored the final run with a single into center field that batted in Hollom and secured a 6-1 Kentucky State win.
 
UP NEXT
The second day of the SIAC Crossover will begin tomorrow March 12 against Clark-Atlanta at 11 a.m. CT followed by Edward Waters at 1 p.m. CT in Birmingham, Alabama.
