K-State Secures Historic NCAA DII Playoff Berth After Best Season Since 1935

INDIANAPOLIS – Kentucky State football made history Sunday as the NCAA selection committee announced the Thorobreds had earned their first-ever Division II Football Playoffs berth after finishing 9-2 in their best season since 1935.

Under the direction of 2025 SIAC Coach of the Year Felton Huggins Jr., the Thorobreds posted a four-win improvement this season—one of the best turnarounds in Division II. For comparison, only six teams nationally recorded a four-game jump in 2024.

Kentucky State closed the regular season with a 35-7 win over Conference Carolinas opponent Shorter on Saturday (Nov. 15). The Thorobreds held the Hawks to their fewest points since Sept. 6, snapping a streak of eight straight games in which Shorter scored at least 19 points.

The Thorobreds will face No. 3 seed Newberry in Super Region Two on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m. at Setzler Field (Newberry, S.C.)  in the first round of the NCAA Division II Championship.
