MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Kentucky State women's volleyball split the opening day of the SIAC Western Cluster at LeMoyne-Owen, falling 3-0 to Spring Hill before bouncing back with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Miles on Friday.
In the opener, Kentucky State fell to Spring Hill 3-0 by set scores of 25-14, 25-18, and 25-12. The Thorobreds led the match with seven total blocks, paced by four from
Laila Wheaton.
Jayla Collins finished with a team-high four kills, while
Cydne Clayton added three aces.
Jada Knight tallied 10 assists, and
Ananiah Huguely anchored the defense with 13 digs, followed by 10 from
Amber Gregory.
The Thorobreds bounced back in their second match with an exciting five-set victory, edging Miles 3-2 by scores of 25-18, 22-25, 16-25, 25-20, and 15-13. Sydnee Brenda-Nixon led Kentucky State with a season-high 11 kills, matched by 11 from
Cydne Clayton. The Thorobreds continued to find their rhythm offensively, finishing with 14 service aces, led by four from
Laila Wheaton and three each from
Jada Knight and Clayton. Knight and
Sienna Stewart shared setting duties with 19 assists apiece, while the defense totaled 82 digs—paced by Knight's 19,
Ananiah Huguely's 18, and
Amber Gregory's 17.
Kentucky State will close out the cluster tomorrow, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. to Tuskegee.
