COLUMBIA, S.C. – Sixteen three-pointers powered the Kentucky State men's basketball team to a commanding 82-63 victory over the Benedict Tigers on Saturday afternoon in Columbia, South Carolina.
Lavar Miller Jr. led the Thorobreds with 32 points, sinking nine three-pointers and 11 field goals. He also added six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Ogien Ayo contributed 19 points, shooting 4-of-5 from the free-throw line, while
Deavion Scales added 15 points and led the Thorobreds with six assists and two steals.
Gregory Melvin led all players with 10 rebounds, added a block, and scored four points.
The Thorobreds opened the first half on an 8-0 run while holding the Tigers scoreless for over four minutes after their first basketball.
Benedict responded to Kentucky State's strong start, going on a 9-2 run on a made three-pointer to take a 12-10 lead with 11:51 remaining in the first half.
Led by six points from
Lavar Miller Jr., the Thorobreds were able to go on a 15-3 run and a 29-15 lead as 4:54 remained in the half.
Miller caught fire early in the second half, sinking three consecutive three-pointers to push the Thorobreds to a 51-37 lead at the 14:21 mark.
Miller later extended the Thorobreds' lead to a game-high 23 points with a jumper, making it 71-48 with 7:03 remaining in regulation.
In the final five minutes, Kentucky State held Benedict to just five points, securing a dominant 82-63 victory.
