TUSKEGEE, Ala. – Khalia Bryant scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Kentucky State, but the Thorobreds fell to Tuskegee 62-47 Monday afternoon in Tuskegee, Alabama.
Bryant led the Thorobreds with 16 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the free-throw line and making five field goals. She also shared the team lead in rebounds with
Shannon Niles, grabbing five boards each.
Kentucky State opened the game with momentum, winning the tip and scoring on their first possession with a three-pointer by
Naja Fenelon. However, Tuskegee responded with a 12-2 run, closing the first quarter with a 15-7 advantage.
The Thorobreds surged back in the second quarter, scoring eight unanswered points. A jumper by
Aaliyah Hayes at the 7:51 mark tied the game at 15. Moments later, Bryant's layup knotted the score again at 17 before Niles drained a three-pointer to cap a 15-2 run, giving Kentucky State a 22-19 lead with 5:18 left in the quarter.
Tuskegee capitalized on a Kentucky State turnover to reclaim a narrow 23-22 edge with 4:04 remaining in the first half. Niles halted the Golden Tigers' run with a pull-up jumper, swinging the lead back to Kentucky State.
Late free throws shifted the momentum briefly in Tuskegee's favor, but Hayes countered with two successful attempts from the line, sending the Thorobreds into halftime with a slim 28-27 advantage.
In the opening minute of the third quarter, the Golden Tigers scored five straight points to claim an early 32-28 lead. Tuskegee followed with a 21-5 run, extending their advantage to 48-33 as the game headed into the fourth quarter.
The Golden Tigers maintained their advantage throughout the fourth quarter, defeating the Thorobreds 62-47 in regulation.
Kentucky State will return home for a week of rest before hosting LeMoyne-Owen Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. inside the Exum Center.
