CINCINNATI – Kentucky State baseball wins the 2024 Joe Morgan HBCU Classic with a commanding 12-7 victory over Wilberforce on Wednesday at the P&G Reds Youth Academy, propelled by a powerful offensive performance and solid pitching.
Kentucky State took charge after a slow start, overcoming an early deficit. The turning point came in the later innings, particularly the eighth, where Kentucky State exploded for five runs. This pivotal inning was marked by a combination of Wilberforce's defensive errors and timely hits from Kentucky State, including a key three-run homer by
Mitchell Collins that solidified the lead.
Pitcher
Yosvany Marquez delivered a strong performance for Kentucky State, maintaining control throughout his innings before
Dashawn Hureskin stepped in to close the game. Despite a late push by Wilberforce, which saw a solo run in the ninth inning due to an outfield error, Kentucky State's earlier efforts secured their win.
Kentucky State's offense was notably robust, totaling 13 hits, highlighted by a solo home run from
Kendall Garland and multiple RBI hits that contributed to their scoring drives. On the defensive side, they committed only one error, showing strong fielding throughout the game.
Wilberforce, despite their best efforts, couldn't overcome the offensive onslaught and their own defensive mishaps, which included two crucial errors.
