FRANKFORT, Ky. – Lavar Miller Jr. led Kentucky State men's basketball to a 74-69 victory over the Tuskegee Golden Tigers, scoring 30 points on 10-of-20 shooting, including eight three-pointers.
Aziel Blackwell and
Brandon Hill followed with double-digit scoring for Kentucky State, contributing 12 and 10 points, respectively. Hill also led the team with four assists and four steals.
Tyson Brooks grabbed 10 boards and went 6-of-8 at the charity stripe to tally eight points.
How It Happened
Blackwell's three-pointer at 16:37 in the first half gave the Thorobreds their first lead at 8-6.
Hill extended the lead to nine points, the largest of the first half, making it 33-24 at the 3:09 mark.
Tuskegee closed the gap late, trailing 38-33 at halftime.
At 17:59 in the second half Blackwell made a floating jump shot in the paint to take a 10-point 45-35 lead.
The Thorobreds were able to jump ahead by as much as 13 at the 14:23 and 12:03 marks of the second half.
Tuskegee narrowed the deficit to single digits repeatedly before a three-pointer and subsequent dunk propelled the Golden Tigers to a 63-54 advantage with just over five minutes remaining in the second half.
Kentucky State rallied when Hill netted a second-chance shot and
Joseph Owens hit one of two free throws, regaining a 66-64 lead for the Thorobreds.
The Golden Tigers closed the gap to 66-65, but the Thorobreds answered with consecutive baskets, extending their advantage to 72-65 with 1:08 to play.
Despite a last-second three-pointer from Tuskegee, the Thorobreds held on for a 74-69 victory.
