Thorobreds Finish Strong in Fourth Quarter to Defeat Spring Hill on Senior Day

FRANKFORT, Ky. – In the waning moments of the fourth quarter, senior Erica Jones netted a layup to clinch a 78-76 triumph over the Spring Hill Badgers on Senior Day.
 
For Senior Day eight Thorobreds were celebrated Hilani Cantone, Naja Fenelon, Gracen Kerr, Nya Caruthers, Sydney Thomas, Aiseosa Woghiren, Kayla Thompson and Erica Jones secured a narrow 78-76 win of the Spring Hill Badgers. 
 
Ker led the afternoon with 19 points, four steals and three assists. Three Thorobreds joined her in the double digits, Cantone with 14, Dilworth tallied 12 and Thomas earned 11 points. 
 
 
How It Happened
The Thorobreds earned their largest lead of eight in the first half on a made three-pointer by Jalyn Shelby, securing a 24-16 lead at the end of the quarter. 
 
Spring Hill tied the game 36-36 on a three-pointer with 2:31 remaining in the second quarter. A turnover by Kentucky State and a field goal by Spring Hill tied the game 38-38 with 1:24 left in the quarter. The Badgers would take a 42-40 at the end of the quarter. 
 
In the third quarter, the Badgers jumped ahead by as much as 10, but a pair of free throws closed the 56-53 lead. 
 
Thomas made both shots at the charity stripe to give the Thorobreds a 66-65 at 5:13 in the fourth quarter. Spring Hill responded to take a brief lead, but an and-one conversion by Woghiren and a made free-throw gave the Thorobreds a 73-70 with 2:12 remaining in the fourth. 
 
Two free throws by Spring Hill tied the game and gave them a brief one-point lead. Kentucky State responded with two makes of their own, but a field by Spring Hill tied the game 76-76 with 15 seconds remaining in regulation. 
 
With just under 10 seconds remaining in regulation, Erica Jones secured the win on a second-chance layup, pushing the Thorobreds past the Badgers 78-76.

Regular season play will come to an end at home on Monday, Feb. 26 to the Tuskegee Golden Bears at 5:30 p.m. inside the Exum Center.
