FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Tigers surged in the third quarter to defeat Kentucky State 72-53 on Monday night at the Exum Center.
Shannon Niles and
Naja Fenelon paced the Thorobreds with 11 points each, while
Mondrea Williams led all players with seven rebounds.
The Tigers struck first, but Bryant sank a pair of free throws to even the score at 4-4 with 8:01 remaining in the first quarter. Edward Waters briefly tied the game at 11-11 with a jump shot, but another free throw from Bryant brought the score to 12-12 at the 2:39 mark.
Naja Fenelon closed out the quarter with a jumper, knotting the game at 14-14 heading into the second.
Midway through the second quarter (4:52), the Thorobreds sparked a 12-2 run to take a 24-16 lead. The Tigers answered with a 12-2 run of their own, tying the game at 26-26 as the teams headed into halftime.
The Thorobreds' cold start to the third quarter ended with an and-one conversion by
Aniyah Jenkins at the 5:48 mark. However, Edward Waters capitalized on their momentum with an extended 33-8 run, building a commanding 47-32 lead with 3:36 remaining in the period.
In the fourth quarter, the Tigers outpaced the Thorobreds 17-14, sealing a commanding 72-53 victory.
Kentucky State will host Albany State this Saturday, Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. inside the Exum Center.
