FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky State women's basketball improved to 3-1 in SIAC with a 65-54 win over Albany State on Saturday afternoon inside the Exum Center.
The Thorobreds found their rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring Albany State 21-8 to overturn a slow start. Kentucky State leveraged their defensive proficiency, forcing 28 turnovers while committing 27 of their own in a scrappy affair.
Khalia Bryant led Kentucky State with a double-double performance, recording 11 points, 10 rebounds, and six steals.
Shannon Niles added 13 points and three assists, while
Aaliyah Hayes provided a spark off the bench with 14 points, including four three-pointers.
Kentucky State's bench played a crucial role, contributing 37 points compared to Albany State's 16. The Thorobreds also dominated in fast-break opportunities, scoring eight points to Albany State's seven.
Albany State was led by Breana Griffin, who tallied a game-high 18 points and six steals. Despite her efforts, the Lady Rams struggled offensively, shooting 33% from the field and making only three of 15 attempts from beyond the arc.
In the final quarter, Kentucky State staved off a late rally by Albany State, which cut the deficit to single digits. The Thorobreds responded with clutch baskets from Hayes and Bryant to seal the victory.
The Thorobreds will continue play on the road against non-conference opponent Union on Saturday, Dec. 11th at 5:30 p.m. in Jackson, Tenn.
