FRANKFORT, Ky. – Aziel Blackwell delivered a flawless performance at the free-throw line, going 14-for-14 and scoring 33 points to lead Kentucky State to an 83-72 victory over Edward Waters.
Morgan Brewer recorded a double-double of 11 points and a team high of 11 rebounds alongside five blocks.
Blackwell scored the first points of the contest on a three-pointer, which initiated a strong opening for the Thorobreds.
Edward Waters took a brief lead of 21-20 that was ended by a three-pointer from
Cordell Livingston at 8:31 of the first half.
A 15-3 run led by six points from Blackwell combined with keeping Edward Waters scoreless for over five minutes led to a 25-24 Kentucky State lead at 3:50 in the first half.
Edward Waters made six straight points in the final minute of the first half to take 39-37 lead going into halftime.
At 11:38 in the second half the Thorobreds held the Tigers scoreless for just over two minutes allowing them to come within one of the Edward Waters 54-53 lead.
Back-to-Back three-pointers by Edward Waters led to a ten-point 63-53 lead with 9:10 remaining in the second half.
Ogien Ayo sank a three-pointer followed by a midrange jumper, giving the Thorobreds a 69-68 lead with 3:06 remaining in the second half. The lead shifted three times in a frenetic minute before Kentucky State took control, hitting seven of their final eight shots during a decisive 20-4 scoring run to secure an 83-72 victory over the Tigers.
On Wednesday, Dec. 4 the Thorobreds will continue play home in a rescheduled matchup against Tuskegee, tip is set for 6 p.m. inside the Exum Center.
