FRANKFORT, Ky. – Five Thorobreds scored in double figures, while
Khalia Bryant and
Mondrea Williams each notched their second double-double of the season, as Kentucky State rolled to a 94-65 victory over Simmons College on Tuesday.
Bryant led the Thorobreds with 17 points, shooting 75% (3-of-4) from the free-throw line and making seven field goals. She also pulled down 10 rebounds, including six on the offensive end.
Williams contributed 14 points, a team-high 11 rebounds, and three blocks to secure her second double-double of the season.
Simmons' Morgan Defoor led the contest with 21 points, shooting a perfect 10-of-10 at the free-throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Simmons (KY) grabbed an early edge, with Andrea Seay knocking down a pair of free throws at the 9:18 mark to give her team a 2-0 lead.
Diara McBroom quickly answered for Kentucky State with a jumper to tie the game at 2-all with 8:58 remaining. Simmons capitalized on Kentucky State turnovers, as Asia Cochran's steal set up Seay for a layup at 8:03, putting Simmons up 5-4. Despite a late layup from
Brittany Campbell, Simmons closed the quarter ahead 19-15.
Second Quarter
Kentucky State took over in the second period, outscoring Simmons 24-6. McBroom's back-to-back baskets tied the game at 19-all with 9:23 left, and Bryant's jumper at the 7:41 mark gave the Thorobreds their first lead at 21-19. Kentucky State's defense smothered Simmons, forcing turnovers that led to easy buckets, including a fast-break jumper from Campbell at 3:33 to push the lead to 27-23. Kentucky State closed the half on an 8-0 run, taking a 39-25 advantage into the locker room.
Third Quarter
The Thorobreds extended their lead in the third, with McBroom converting a layup just 40 seconds in to make it 43-25. Simmons briefly halted the surge with a 3-pointer by Morgan Defoor at 6:45, cutting the lead to 47-30. Kentucky State's bench made a strong impact, highlighted by
Brittany Campbell's 3-pointer at 4:18 to stretch the lead to 58-33. Fenelon closed the quarter with two free throws at 1:27, giving the Thorobreds a commanding 66-38 lead.
Fourth Quarter
Simmons showed life in the final frame, with Seay scoring a layup at 7:48 to cut the deficit to 71-48. But Kentucky State responded with a fast-break layup from Bryant at 3:19, extending the lead to 85-57. Fenelon's assist on McBroom's jumper at 1:36 capped the scoring, sealing the Thorobreds' 94-65 victory.

The Thorobreds will head to Cleveland, Tenn. on Saturday, Nov. to take on non-conference opponent Lee at 2 p.m.
