FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky State women's basketball capitalized on 19 second-chance points, with
Diara McBroom recording a double-double to lead the Thorobreds to a 47-44 victory over Fort Valley State.
Diara McBroom recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, leading the Thorobreds alongside
Bailey Lee, who also contributed 11 points.
The first quarter featured a back-and-forth battle, with the game tied at 8-8 for the fourth time at the 2:25 mark. The Thorobreds closed the quarter on a run, capped by a
Bailey Lee layup, to take a 13-8 lead heading into the second.
Kentucky State built its largest lead of the game late in the second quarter when
Shannon Niles sank a jump shot with 52 seconds remaining, extending the Thorobreds' advantage to 28-14.
Fort Valley State held Kentucky State to just five points in the third quarter, rallying to tie the game at 33-33 heading into the final period.
Khalia Bryant helped Kentucky State erase the Wildcats' lead, sinking a free throw to tie the game at 36-36 with 4:22 remaining in the fourth quarter. She kept the Thorobreds alive with a crucial layup at the 1:13 mark in regulation.
A late three-pointer by the Wildcats briefly gave them a one-point lead, but
Bailey Lee's second-chance layup and two clutch free throws by
Shannon Niles sealed a 47-44 victory for the Thorobreds.
UP NEXT
Kentucky State will stay at home to host Simmons on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m. for School Day, with students from Second Street Middle School set to cheer on the Thorobreds.
